  • A new study has found that most women feel the need to lie about themselves to avoid rejection.
  • Research shows that 61% lie about their lives and embellish their interests to avoid awkward silences.
  • However, data shows that heterosexual women should worry less about being themselves.

The dating world can be pretty daunting for everyone involved. Meeting someone new is both nerve-wracking and (if we're being honest) a little bit tedious.

A new study has found that, for women specifically, a lot more effort goes into dating - this is because most women feel the need to lie about themselves to avoid facing rejection.

Dating app Pure recently surveyed 3 000 adults to find out exactly how comfortable women were on the dating scene - and, judging by the results, women feel as out of place as a snowball in the desert.

The lies women tell

Regarding relationships and romance, things tend to get pretty complicated very quickly. It turns out that women complicate things even further with their tendency to lie about themselves during dates.

The study revealed that women often take drastic measures to avoid driving away their dates.

According to Pure, 78% of the women surveyed did not authentically present themselves during the very first date.

The study also showed that most women believed they were being judged primarily on their physical appearance and behaviour.

A whopping 73% of women also feel afraid to talk about themselves, with 20% citing the fear that they may reveal too much.

The 'body count' debate

While there shouldn't be, there is always a lot of controversy around a woman's "body count", and how many people she has slept with.

This has left many women feeling ashamed to discuss their sexuality during a date.

Pure reveals that 84% of women worry that sharing stories of their sexual experiences will lead to judgement from their dates.

This belief matches the figure of 1 in 5 men (17%) who participated in the study and confirmed that it was a turn-off for them when a woman has had "too many" sexual partners.

They also don't want to hear too much about their date's kinky experiences.

"For the liberal women, there's no real reason to be shy because 83% of men in the study shared that, unlike the 17%, they don't mind hearing about a woman's sex life."

The dating disconnect

Shockingly, women also confessed to dumbing themselves down on a date.

Just over 50% of the women who took part in the survey bought into studies suggesting that men tend to pick less intelligent partners.

In contrast, 80% of men in the study actually prefer to date strong and intelligent women.

In addition to dumbing themselves down, women also confessed to making themselves "smaller", to avoid threatening men with their achievements and abilities.

The study also shows that women feel uncomfortable disagreeing with their date, while 78% of men said that they prefer women who aren't afraid to speak their minds.

86% of men believe that debating is a healthy part of any relationship and don't mind a good old back and forth on the first date.

More money, no problems

Regarding finances, men don't appear to have any qualms about dating a high-earner.

According to the survey, 81% of men didn't care if their date earned more than them.

While it used to be that men were the big earners and took pride in that, women are earning their keep, and it turns out most men simply don't mind.
